Pool Chairs
There are two general
categories of pool chairs: pool deck chairs, and floating pool
chairs. Each of these consists of countless chair styles. Pool
chairs for the pool deck are used for relaxing, reading, taking
in the view, and suntanning by the pool. You rarely find
upholstered chairs or wicker chairs around a pool because
swimming pools offer up a little too much splashed water and
hot sunshine which both combine to corrode those chair
materials fast.
The most common pool chairs
are those made of plastic. Plastic won't rust from the
moisture, and has many years of use before the constant wear of
water, sun, and people begin to rough down the surface. More
often than not, plastic pool chairs will be cracked or broken
from dropping or callous handling long before they will be
damaged by water and weather. Plastic pool chairs are light and
easy to move around, with the longer lounge chairs having
wheels to enable effortless repositioning by poolgoers who want
to move chairs around or just rotate them to follow the path of
the sun for the most direct tanning. Most plastic pool chairs
also have slats or holes in them so rain and splashed pool
water can drain out quickly. Plastic pool deck chairs are seen
around private pools and resorts everywhere, and can be bought
almost anywhere, from online to pool supply stores to
department stores and home and garden stores, and are probably
the cheapest and handiest of all deck chairs.
Traditional deck chairs also
serve as pool chairs, though their lower seat height,
foldability, and lightness make them more popular around
private residential pools rather than resort pools. Resort
pools usually want more substantial and tougher chairs that can
remain where they are day and night, while traditional deck
chairs have fabric and have many moving parts that can loosen
over time with a lot of use.
Below: pool chairs for pool decks: the
most common are plastic lounge chairs, for private and resort
pools; nicer resorts feature wooden pool chairs with water
resistant cushions on them; and some resort pools feature
cutting edge contemporary designs and colors in their pool
chairs.

Wooden pool chairs are another
popular choice of resort poolside furniture, as they are sturdy
and can withstand many guests of many sizes. Most have wheels
and can be moved relatively easily though they are considerably
heavier than their plastic counterparts, and they have
adjustable backrests for sitting, laying down or reclining.
Most wooden pool chairs come with some form of cushioning so
you're not sitting for long periods on hard wood. The
cushioning is usually a foam, covered by some waterproof or
water resistant fabric that is soft but not affected by water
and sun.
Pool deck chairs are meant to
be in fixed positions, but floating pool chairs are where the
fun are. Although you can place these inflatable or foam chairs
on the pool deck, they are made of a thin inflatable material
and a rough deck can easily puncture or tear them, especially
if you are sitting on them. Floating pool chairs are made to
float! They come in many sizes, from small one-seaters to huge
circular chairs that can seat a handful of poolgoers or more.
Floating pool chairs can also have attached pockets for storing
keys or sunglasses while you're in the water, or larger pockets
for storing a towel, hat, and other things you may want to
float along with. Many also have built in 'drink containers',
depressions in the chair shaped to hold a cool drink for you
while you float.
